If your accounts are required to be audited, you may have more time to submit your audit report and income tax return (ITR) for the assessment year (AY) 2026–27. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has moved the audit report deadline for specified taxpayers from 30 September to 21 October 2026. Their ITR deadline has moved from 31 October to 21 November 2026.
These dates do not apply to every taxpayer. Before changing your filing plans, check which category you fall under. AY 2026–27 relates to income earned during financial year (FY) 2025–26.
What are the Revised Tax Audit and ITR Deadlines?
The two filings have separate deadlines. The audit report is due first, followed by the return of income.
Filing or taxpayer category | Original due date | Revised due date | What changed? |
|---|---|---|---|
Audit report for the specified audit cases | 30 September 2026 | 21 October 2026 | Extended by 21 days |
ITR for a company, whether or not a tax audit applies | 31 October 2026 | 21 November 2026 | Extended by 21 days |
ITR for a non-company taxpayer whose accounts must be audited under the Income-tax Act or another applicable law | 31 October 2026 | 21 November 2026 | Extended by 21 days, where the separate transfer pricing deadline does not apply |
ITR for a partner of a firm whose accounts must be audited | 31 October 2026 | 21 November 2026 | Extended by 21 days, where the separate transfer pricing deadline does not apply |
ITR for a trust whose accounts must be audited under applicable law | 31 October 2026 | 21 November 2026 | Extended by 21 days, where the separate transfer pricing deadline does not apply |
ITR for a taxpayer covered by the separate transfer pricing filing deadline | 30 November 2026 | 30 November 2026 | No change under this announcement |
Form 3CEB for a transfer pricing case | 31 October 2026 | 31 October 2026 | No change under this announcement |
The CBDT announcement expressly extends the due dates for the specified category of taxpayers whose ITR was due on 31 October. The category breakdown above helps you read the announcement, but your applicable deadline depends on your own filing requirements. If you have a transfer pricing reporting obligation, confirm the relevant dates with your tax adviser.
Who Can Use the Extended Deadlines?
The extension is applicable to taxpayers falling under SI. No. 2 of the Table in Explanation 2 to Section 139(1) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, in cases where the provisions of Section 92E are not applicable.
This category includes:
Does the Extension Apply to All ITR Filers?
No. The announcement does not give every taxpayer until 21 November to file. If you are a non-audit individual taxpayer, you cannot rely on this extension simply because you have not yet filed your return. Likewise, the announcement does not change the separate 30 November ITR deadline for applicable transfer pricing cases or the 31 October Form 3CEB deadline shown above.
Check your filing category rather than using a date from a general headline. If you have several sources of income, the presence of freelance or business income alone does not tell you whether a tax audit is required.
Why are There Two Different Deadlines?
An audit report and an ITR serve different purposes. A chartered accountant (CA) prepares and uploads the applicable audit report through the income tax e-filing portal. Your ITR reports your income, deductions and tax position for the year.
The revised audit report date is 21 October 2026, while the revised ITR date for the covered taxpayers is 21 November 2026. The gap gives you time to review the audited figures and use the relevant information when preparing your return. You should check the report in your e-filing account and complete any acceptance or verification required on the portal. An upload by your CA should not be your only confirmation that the process is complete.
What Should You Do Before Filing?
First, confirm whether your return falls within the category covered by the extension. Then provide your CA with the accounts, statements and supporting records needed to complete the audit. Once the report is uploaded, review its details and check its status in your e-filing account.
You can then reconcile the figures in the report with your ITR, confirm any outstanding tax payment and submit the return by the deadline that applies to you. An extension of a filing date should not be treated as an automatic waiver of tax or interest. The CBDT press release said that a formal order or notification would be issued separately, so check the final wording for any specific conditions.
Final Thoughts
For the specified audit cases, the revised dates are 21 October 2026 for the audit report and 21 November 2026 for the ITR. The main step is to identify your filing category before relying on either date. Once you have confirmed it, complete the audit report process and use the final figures to file your return accurately.
