When you want to set aside money every month to reach your financial goals in a disciplined manner, a Recurring Deposit (RD) may give you a structured way to save towards a planned expense. You can contribute a fixed amount every month and receive your accumulated savings with interest (paid on a quarterly basis) at maturity.
You can open an RD through a post office, bank, small finance bank, etc. Although both follow a similar savings approach, their interest rates, tenure options, and withdrawal conditions differ. Comparing these features helps you understand how each option fits your budget and the date when you expect to need your money.
What are Post Office RDs and Bank RDs?
The Indian Postal Service offers the Post Office RDs. Its standard term is five years, during which you make 60 monthly deposits. You can start with ₹100 a month, with higher installments in multiples of ₹10, with no upper limit on the investment amount.
A bank RD also lets you save through regular monthly instalments. However, you choose from the tenures and deposit amounts bank offers. Interest rates, payment conditions and account facilities depend on the institution and product you select.
With either option, your maturity proceeds comprise the instalments you have deposited and the interest earned, subject to any applicable charges or tax deductions.
Bring discipline to your savings with Ujjivan Recurring Deposit. Earn higher interest and guaranteed returns. Choose investment tenure and amount (starting from just ₹100) as per your choice. Apply for Ujjivan RD online today!
Post Office RD vs Bank RD: Key Differences
| Feature | Post Office RD | Bank RD |
|---|---|---|
| Interest Rate | Government-notified rate; currently 6.7% per annum (compounded quarterly) | Varies by bank, tenure and customer category |
| Standard Tenure | 5 years | Generally, 6 months to 10 years |
| Minimum Monthly Instalment | ₹100, with higher amounts in multiples of ₹10 | Depends on the bank |
| Deposit Protection | Government-backed small savings scheme | DICGC insurance for eligible deposits, within the applicable limit |
| Premature Closure | Permitted after three years, subject to scheme conditions | Generally permitted under the bank's product rules |
| Effect of Early Closure | Applicable Post Office Savings Account interest replaces the RD return | Interest may be recalculated and a penalty may apply |
| Payment Facilities | Post office payments and supported digital channels | Branch services, automatic debits and supported digital channels |
The Post Office RD rate remains 6.7% p.a. (compounded quarterly) for October–December 2026, compounded quarterly. Bank rates and conditions should be checked for your chosen tenure when you open the account.
How Do Interest Rates and Returns Compare?
Your RD return depends on the applicable interest rate, tenure and timing of your monthly deposits. When comparing the two options, consider:
How Much Flexibility Does Each RD Offer?
Flexibility matters when your savings timeline or monthly budget changes. The main differences are:
Choose a tenure that matches when you need the money, and check the financial impact of closing the account early.
How are Your Deposits Protected?
1. Post Office RD
Your Post Office RD is part of the Government of India's small savings programme. Its government backing differs from the deposit insurance mechanism that applies to eligible bank deposits. The ₹5 lakh DICGC limit is not the protection framework for the Post Office RD scheme.
2. Bank RD
When you hold an RD with a DICGC-insured bank, eligible deposits are insured up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including principal and interest, when held in the same right and capacity. This limit applies to your combined eligible balances at that bank. Your savings account, fixed deposits and recurring deposits are added together for this purpose, including accounts at different branches. Deposits at separate insured banks receive separate coverage.
When comparing safety, consider both the protection available and your total deposits with the institution.
How is RD Interest Taxed?
Interest earned on a standard domestic RD is generally taxable, whether you hold it with a bank or a post office. Your final tax liability depends on your total taxable income, applicable tax regime and any deductions available to you. Your RD contributions do not receive a tax deduction merely because the deposit has a five-year tenure. A standard RD is different from a qualifying five-year tax-saving fixed or time deposit.
Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and your final tax liability are also different. For Bank RDs, 10% TDS is deducted by the bank if your interest income exceeds ₹50,000 (for regular depositors) and ₹1 lakh (for senior citizens) in a financial year. If your income is below the taxable limit, you can claim TDS exemption by filing Form 121.
What Should You Check Before Opening an RD?
Your comparison can begin with the purpose of your savings and the date when you need them. From there, review:
These checks help you assess the deposit as a whole, alongside its advertised interest rate.
Final Thoughts
A Post Office RD and a bank RD give you two ways to turn regular monthly contributions into a future lump sum. The Post Office scheme offers a standard five-year structure with government backing, while banks provide varying tenure choices, rates and account facilities.
Your choice can depend on how long you want to save, the return available for that period and the access you may need before maturity. Comparing these features together helps you choose an RD that fits your plans without treating either option as universally better.
