Yes, you can open a current account in India without GST registration, provided you meet the bank’s eligibility, Know Your Customer (KYC) and business-document requirements. A GST certificate can help establish your business’s identity, but it is not a compulsory document for every current account application.

If you run a small business, work independently or are starting a new enterprise, you may be able to apply using other accepted documents. The requirements depend on your business structure and the account you choose. Your account application and GST registration obligations are separate matters. While a bank may accept your application without a GST Identification Number (GSTIN), you must still register under GST if the law requires your business to do so.

Is GST Registration Mandatory to Open a Current Account?

GST registration is not a universal requirement for opening a current account. Banks need to verify your identity, your business’s existence, and the people authorised to operate the account. Depending on your circumstances, documents other than a GST certificate can support these checks.

However, requirements can differ across banks, account variants and application channels. Some digital account-opening processes specifically require a GSTIN, even when other account-opening routes accept alternative documents. Before applying, ask whether the account you have selected supports businesses without GST registration and which documents you can submit.

What Documents Can You Submit Without a GST Certificate?

If you operate a sole proprietorship, your bank will verify both you as the proprietor and the business.

Alternative business proofs for opening a business current account without GST registration may include:

  • Udyam registration: A government-issued Udyam Registration Certificate is included in the RBI’s prescribed list.
  • Shops and Establishments certificate: A certificate or licence issued by the relevant municipal authority.
  • Professional licence: A certificate of practice issued by a statutory professional body, where applicable.
  • Income tax return: Your complete return showing the proprietary firm’s income, rather than only the filing acknowledgement.
  • Utility bills: Eligible electricity, water or landline bills in the business’s name.
  • Other applicable registrations: For example, a professional tax registration or an Importer Exporter Code.

For sole proprietorships, the RBI normally requires two prescribed documents as proof of business or activity, in addition to the proprietor’s KYC. If providing two is not possible, the bank may accept one at its discretion after contact-point verification and other checks establishing the business’s existence and activity.

Check with your bank to confirm the specific combinations they accept. Keep in mind that just because a document is listed as accepted, it may not be sufficient on its own.

How Do Requirements Differ by Business Structure?

Your documentation depends on how your business is constituted. A sole proprietorship’s checklist should not be applied to a company or partnership.

Business Structure

Examples of Relevant Documents

Sole proprietorship

Proprietor’s KYC and PAN, plus accepted business proofs

Partnership

Partnership deed, firm’s PAN, relevant registration or existence proof, and partners’ KYC

Limited liability partnership (LLP)

Incorporation certificate, LLP agreement, entity PAN and account-opening authorisation

Company

Incorporation certificate, Memorandum and Articles of Association, company PAN and board authorisation

Banks also obtain relevant address, authorised-signatory and beneficial-owner details. This table is an indicative guide only, your bank’s checklist will establish what you need to submit.

When Does Your Business Need GST Registration?

Whether you need GST registration depends on your aggregate turnover, the state or Union territory from which you supply, and the nature of your business.

The general turnover thresholds are:

Type of Supply

General Registration Threshold

Geographic Scope

Services

₹20 lakh

States and Union territories other than the four listed below

Services

₹10 lakh

Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura

Exclusive supply of goods, subject to eligibility conditions

₹40 lakh

States and Union territories where the higher exemption applies

Exclusive supply of goods

₹20 lakh

Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura and Uttarakhand

GST Registration generally becomes necessary when your aggregate annual turnover exceeds the applicable threshold, subject to other registration provisions and exemptions. The ₹40 lakh exemption is conditional and does not apply to every goods supplier.

Aggregate turnover is generally calculated across India for businesses operating under the same PAN. It includes taxable supplies, exempt supplies, exports and inter-state supplies, while excluding GST and inward supplies on which tax is payable under reverse charge. It therefore differs from the amount credited to one bank account.

Turnover is not the only consideration. Compulsory-registration provisions can apply below these thresholds, subject to notified exemptions. Separately, businesses exclusively supplying wholly exempt or non-taxable goods or services are generally exempt from registration.

Opening a current account does not alter these rules. Assess your registration obligation based on your business activities.

Can GST Apply to Your Current Account Charges?

Yes. Your business’s GST registration status and the tax treatment of banking services are separate matters. Applicable current account service charges may attract GST even if you do not have a GSTIN. Published bank schedules commonly state that charges are exclusive of applicable GST.

When comparing business current accounts, consider the total cost of chargeable services alongside balance requirements and transaction allowances.

Final Thoughts

You may be able to open a current account without GST registration by providing acceptable KYC and business documents. Verifying the checklist for your business structure and selected account can help you prepare a complete application.

Alongside the banking requirements, review whether your turnover or activities create a GST registration obligation. This allows you to arrange your business banking while meeting the tax requirements that apply to your business.

Udyam registration can serve as business proof for a sole proprietorship. You will still need the proprietor’s KYC and any additional documents or verification required by the bank.

For a current account in a sole proprietorship’s name, personal identification documents alone generally do not meet the separate business-proof requirements.

You can ask the bank to assess your application using other accepted business proofs. Explain that your business is new and confirm which documents are suitable.

No. Opening the account does not itself trigger GST registration. Your obligation depends on the registration provisions applicable to your business.

Apply within the applicable statutory deadline, generally 30 days from becoming liable, and provide your GST details to the bank where required to update its records.
