Most UPI frauds happen because fraudsters trick users into taking the wrong action. They create urgency, fear, trust or confusion. The safest UPI habit in 2026 is to pause for a few seconds before approving any payment.

In this blog, we will discuss practical UPI safety tips, common fraud tactics, and what users should do before approving any digital payment.

UPI PIN: The Most Important Factor for Transactions

This is the most important UPI safety rule. The UPI PIN is used when you pay someone. For receiving funds, UPI PIN is not required.

If someone says you must enter your PIN to receive a refund, cashback, prize, advance payment, rent, deposit or pending transfer, treat it as a warning sign. That is not how UPI works.

Check the Receiver Details Before Paying

Before making a UPI payment, check the receiver’s name on the payment screen. Do not rely only on the QR code, mobile number or UPI ID. If you are paying a shop, the name shown on the screen should match the shop or business. If you are sending money to a person, confirm the name before approving the transaction.

This matters because fake QR codes and wrong UPI IDs can look convincing. A few seconds of checking can stop a wrong transfer.

Be Careful With Collection Requests

A collection request is not money coming into your account. It is a request asking you to pay someone. Fraudsters often misuse collect requests. They may pretend to be a buyer, delivery agent, bank employee, refund officer or customer-care executive.

Approve a collection request only when you clearly know who sent it, why it was sent and what amount is being requested. If the request is unexpected, reject it.

Do Not Scan a QR Code to Receive Money

QR codes are usually used to make a payment, not to receive money. If someone asks you to scan a QR code to receive money, refund, prize amount, rent, advance payment or product payment, stop immediately. This is common in marketplace scams, fake customer-care scams and refund scams.

To receive money, you can share your UPI ID or mobile number linked to UPI. You do not need to scan a QR code or enter your UPI PIN.

Avoid Unknown Links and APK Files

Do not download payment apps, banking apps, KYC apps or refund apps from links received on WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS or email. Use only official app stores.

Fraudsters often create fake links that look like bank pages, courier pages, electricity bill pages, tax refund pages or payment dispute pages. These links may collect your details or make you install a harmful app.

If you need to update KYC, check a refund, resolve a failed payment or contact support, open the official app or website yourself. Do not use links sent by unknown people.

Do Not Install Screen-Sharing Apps for Payment Help

No bank, UPI app or genuine customer-care team needs to see your phone screen to solve a payment issue. If someone asks you to install a screen-sharing, remote-access or support app, avoid it. These apps can expose your OTPs, messages, banking screens, card details and UPI activity.

This method is common in fake customer-care scams. The fraudster first creates a problem, then offers to "help" by asking for screen access. Once they can see the screen, they can guide the user into approving a transaction.

Protect Your Phone Like a Payment Device

Your phone is now connected to your bank account. Treat it like a payment device. Use a strong screen lock. Enable fingerprint or face unlock for your UPI apps if available. Do not share your phone with strangers for payment help. Avoid saving UPI PINs, passwords or card details in Notes, WhatsApp chats, screenshots or gallery images.

Keep your UPI apps updated. Updates often include security improvements and bug fixes.

Also avoid using public Wi-Fi for banking or payment activity. If you must use public Wi-Fi, avoid opening payment apps or entering sensitive details.

Reduce Risk Before Fraud Happens

UPI safety is not only about reacting after fraud. You can reduce risk in advance. Set a sensible daily UPI limit if your bank or payment app allows it. Use one bank account for daily UPI payments and avoid linking your main savings account everywhere. Keep only the required balance in the account used for daily QR scans, small transfers and merchant payments.

This does not stop every fraud, but it can reduce the amount exposed.

Enable SMS and email alerts for debit transactions. The faster you notice a suspicious debit, the faster you can report it.

Also save your bank's fraud helpline and the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 on your phone. During a digital fraud situation, searching for numbers online can waste time and may lead to fake customer-care numbers.

Watch Out for Urgency, Fear and Rewards

Many UPI scams work by creating pressure. A message may say your KYC will expire, your SIM will be blocked, your electricity will be disconnected, your parcel is stuck, your bank account will be frozen or a police complaint has been raised.

Other scams use rewards. They may mention cashback, refund, lottery, job payment, investment profit, government benefit or easy-money offers. Both methods are designed to make you act quickly.

Do not respond in a hurry. Open the official app, call the official number or visit the official website before taking any action.

What to Do If Money is Lost?

If you lose money through UPI fraud, act quickly. Call your bank's fraud helpline and report the transaction. Ask the bank to block UPI access or freeze the account if needed. Report the fraud on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call 1930.

Also raise a dispute through your UPI app or bank. Save the transaction ID, screenshots, SMS alerts, call logs, UPI ID, complaint number and any messages from the fraudster. Do not delete WhatsApp chats, SMS messages or call history related to the fraud. These details may help during review.

Change your UPI PIN if you suspect your details were exposed. If you installed any unknown app, uninstall it and scan the phone using a trusted security tool.

Final Thoughts

UPI safety is not about avoiding digital payments. It is about using them carefully. Before entering your UPI PIN, check three things: Are you sending money? Is the receiver correct? Is the amount correct?

Before scanning a QR code, ask whether you are paying or receiving. Before clicking a link, ask whether it came from an official source. Before trusting a caller, check whether they are creating urgency or asking for sensitive access.
