An FD maturity amount may be held due to an account-related issue, adjusted against an overdraft or other outstanding amount, or credited without a separate notification. The reason can depend on your FD's maturity instructions, linked account, outstanding obligations, or a delay in the bank's processing.
This blog explains the different situations in which you may experience a delay or not receive the maturity amount in your account, and what you should do in each case.
What Does FD Maturity Amount Include?
It depends on the type of FD you choose. If you choose a regular payout FD, the maturity amount may include only the principal amount, as the interest is paid at regular intervals. If you choose a cumulative FD, the maturity amount includes the principal amount and the interest earned on the deposit.
Where Can You Check Your FD Maturity Details?
You can check your FD maturity date and related details through several banking channels, such as:
In What Situations May an FD Maturity Amount Not Be Credited to Your Account?
There can be bank-side reasons, account-related issues, network issues, or other reasons why the maturity amount may not be credited to your account.
1. The FD Was Set to Auto-Renew
While booking an FD, you need to give instructions on what the bank should do when the FD matures. You may get options such as:
If you select an auto-renewal option, the bank will renew the FD at the rate applicable on the renewal date, for the same tenure or the tenure communicated when you booked the FD. The maturity proceeds may be placed into a new FD, so you may not see the amount credited to your bank account.
A few days before maturity, the bank may also contact you through email, SMS, WhatsApp or a phone call regarding the FD's maturity or renewal.
2. There Is a Loan or Overdraft Against the FD
If there is overdraft against an FD, the FD is held as collateral until you repay the loan linked to the FD. If you fail to repay the loan, the bank may adjust the remaining loan amount from the FD maturity amount. It can be a part of the maturity amount or the entire amount, depending on the outstanding loan amount.
Check if there are any loans linked to the FD and whether they are still active or have been closed.
If the loan or overdraft is still active, repay the outstanding amount and complete the closure process. The maturity amount can then be credited as per the applicable process.
3. The Maturity Amount Was Credited but You Did Not Get a Notification
Sometimes, due to network, telecommunication or bank communication issues, you may not receive a notification even if the FD maturity amount has been credited to your bank account.
In such a case, check your account through the bank's mobile app or net banking. You can also visit the branch and ask for an account statement to check whether the amount has been credited.
4. The Maturity Amount Is Held Due to an Account-Related Issue
If the linked bank account is inactive, closed, frozen, or has another restriction, maturity proceeds may not be credited. If the linked account has any such restrictions, the bank can guide you on the process to receive the maturity proceeds.
5. The Maturity Amount Was Credited to the Primary Holder
If you hold a joint FD and the primary depositor's account was registered for the maturity proceeds, you may not find the amount credited to your account. Check with the primary holder to see if the maturity amount was credited to their account.
6. There May Be a Technical or Processing Issue
Sometimes, due to a technical or processing issue, the FD maturity amount may take some time to reflect in your account. If everything is correct from your end, wait for 2–3 days and check your account again.
7. The KYC of the Payout Account Needs to Be Updated
If the KYC details of the account linked to the FD are outdated or require an update, the maturity proceeds may not be credited to the account until the KYC requirements are completed. Check the KYC status of the payout account and update the required details if needed.
8. The Maturity Amount May Have Been Credited to a Different Account
The maturity amount may have been credited to a different account of yours if another account was registered for receiving the FD proceeds. There may also be cases where an error while entering the payout account details results in the details matching another valid account.
In such cases, the maturity proceeds may have been credited to the respective account. Check the payout account details registered with the FD and verify the account where the amount was credited.
What If Everything Is Correct but the FD Maturity Amount Is Still Not Credited?
If all the points are clear and there is no issue from your end, check that:
If all these points are clear while the maturity amount is still due from the bank, contact the bank and ask when you can expect the credit. If the response is not satisfactory or you do not receive a response within the applicable time, you can raise a complaint through the RBI Ombudsman process.
Check out our guide on what the RBI Ombudsman is and how to file a complaint using the RBI Ombudsman process.
When Can Your FD Maturity Amount Differ From the Estimated Amount?
When you compare the FD maturity amount with an estimate from an FD interest calculator or the amount provided by the bank, the actual maturity amount may vary because:
Final Thoughts
An FD maturity date is not always the end of the deposit journey. The way you set up the FD, manage linked accounts and respond to maturity can affect what happens next. Keeping track of maturity dates, payout instructions and linked accounts can help you avoid confusion when the deposit matures. A quick check before and after maturity can also help you spot any issue early and take the right action.
