The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector is a crucial pillar of India's economy. As per a PIB factsheet released on 6 October 2026, MSMEs contribute 31.1% to GDP, 48.58% to exports and 35.4% to manufacturing output. As of 6 October 2026, around 9.78 crore MSMEs were registered under the Udyam and Udyam Assist Platform, reporting approximately 43.28 crore employment opportunities. Recognizing their importance, the Government of India has revamped MSME classification to facilitate ease of business and support growth. Earlier, MSMEs were classified based on investment in plant, machinery, or equipment, but now, investment and annual turnover are both considered. Additionally, the distinction between manufacturing and service sectors has been removed, simplifying the classification process.
Latest MSME Classification Applicable from April 2025
The MSME classification criteria have been revised to accommodate growing businesses. The updated classification is as follows:
Category | Investment Limit | Annual Turnover Limit |
| Micro | Up to ₹2.5 crore | Up to ₹10 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹25 crore | Up to ₹100 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹125 crore | Up to ₹500 crore |
