When you receive a payment by cheque, intimation regarding when the money will become available may help you plan your spending and transfers better. The time you deposit the cheque matters, but so do your bank’s collection arrangements and the stages involved in clearing.
India’s move to continuous clearing through the Cheque Truncation System (CTS), rolled out in October 2025, has made faster payments possible. However, same-day clearing depends on when your cheque enters the system and whether it is successfully processed.
Here is how the cheque clearing process works and what the revised rules mean for you.
What is the Cheque Truncation System (CTS)?
CTS allows banks to clear cheques using electronic images and payment details. When you deposit a cheque, your bank captures this information and sends it through the clearing house to the paying bank, which holds the issuer’s account.
The physical cheque generally stays with your bank. This reduces the need to transport it between banks and helps speed up collection.
How Does Continuous Cheque Clearing Work?
Under the earlier process, banks handled cheque clearing in batches. Continuous clearing allows cheque images to move through the system throughout the presentation session, while paying banks process and confirm them during the confirmation session.
Your cheque goes through these stages:
1. Deposit: You submit the cheque to your bank
2. Presentation: Your bank scans it and submits the image and details for clearing
3. Confirmation: The paying bank checks the cheque and confirms whether it will honour or reject it
4. Settlement: The clearing house settles eligible payments between banks
5. Release of funds: Your bank makes the proceeds available to you
Settlement takes place hourly, starting at 11 am and continuing until the confirmation session ends. Cheques with positive confirmation, along with those deemed approved under the applicable rules, are included for settlement. For you, the practical benefit is that a cheque can move through these stages within the same clearing day.
What are the Current Cheque Clearing Timings?
The RBI’s December 2025 amendment sets out the following clearing windows:
Clearing Stage | Timing | What Happens |
Presentation session | 9 am to 3 pm | Banks submit cheque images and details |
Confirmation session | 9 am to 7 pm | Paying banks confirm or reject cheques |
These timings are in Indian Standard Time (IST). The original August 2025 circular specified a presentation window of 10 am to 4 pm and a confirmation window of 10 am to 7 pm. The RBI revised both windows on 24 December 2025.
Your bank’s deposit cut-off is separate from the clearing-system window. A branch may need time to collect and process your cheque before submitting it. Check the cut-off displayed at your branch, including the arrangements for cheques placed in a drop box. Deposits made after the applicable cut-off may enter the next clearing cycle.
When Can You Expect Same-Day Credit?
Same-day credit is possible when your cheque is presented during the relevant session and successfully processed for settlement.
The RBI requires your bank to release payment immediately after successful settlement, and no later than one hour afterwards, subject to usual safeguards. The one-hour period starts from settlement, rather than from the time you deposit the cheque.
For example, if settlement for your cheque is successfully completed at 2 pm, your bank shall release the proceeds by 3 pm, subject to those safeguards. This is an illustration of the release deadline, rather than a promised clearing time for every cheque.
When planning a payment using those proceeds, check that the amount is available for withdrawal or transfer.
Does the Three-Hour Clearing Rule Apply?
The RBI originally scheduled Phase 2 of continuous clearing for 3 January 2026. It proposed a T+3 clear-hours confirmation deadline for paying banks. This deadline is related to processing within the clearing system, rather than three hours from your deposit at a branch.
On 24 December 2025, the RBI postponed Phase 2 until further notice to give banks more time to streamline their operations. The three-hour deadline should therefore not be treated as an active guarantee that your cheque proceeds will become available within three hours of deposit.
What May Affect Your Cheque Clearing Time?
Your cheque’s progress can depend on several factors:
If the process is taking longer than expected, ask your bank whether the cheque has been presented, returned or held pending further checks.
What Should You Check Before Depositing or Issuing a Cheque?
A few checks can help you avoid collection issues:
Final Thoughts
Continuous clearing can help you receive cheque payments on the same day. Your bank’s deposit cut-off and the cheque’s processing status remain useful points to check when planning around the payment.
The current verified CTS presentation window is 9 am–3 pm, while Phase 2 remains postponed. You can benefit from faster processing without assuming that every cheque payment will reach your account within three hours.
