An unfamiliar mobile connection registered in your name can create serious problems. It can be used for fraudulent calls, financial scams or other unlawful activities, while telecom records continue to identify you as the subscriber.

You can check such connections through the Government of India's Sanchar Saathi portal. Although this is commonly described as checking SIM cards linked to Aadhaar, the portal does not ask you to enter your Aadhaar number. It uses telecom KYC records to show the mobile connections issued in your name.

SIM Cards and Aadhaar KYC Link Explained

When you obtain a mobile connection, the telecom operator must verify your identity through its KYC process. Aadhaar is one of the documents that may be used for this verification, which is why mobile connections are often described as being linked to Aadhaar.

The connection is ultimately recorded against your subscriber identity with the telecom operator. You may also have obtained a SIM using another accepted identity document. For this reason, Sanchar Saathi describes its service as "Know Mobile Connections in Your Name" rather than an Aadhaar linked SIM search.

What the Sanchar Saathi Portal Does?

Sanchar Saathi is a citizen focused platform operated by the Department of Telecommunications. Its "Know Mobile Connections in Your Name" facility allows you to review numbers issued under your identity and identify connections you use, which you no longer require or never requested. The service is available through the website and mobile application.

The Department of Telecommunications introduced the mobile application in January 2025, extending the services already available through the portal.

What Do You Need Before Checking Numbers Linked to Your Name?

To check numbers linked to your name or Aadhaar you will need the following ready:

  • An active Indian mobile number registered in your name
  • Access to that number for OTP verification
  • A phone or computer with an internet connection

The active number confirms your identity and allows the service to retrieve other connections recorded under the same subscriber details.

How to Check the SIM Cards Registered in Your Name

You can check the numbers registered against your name by following these steps:

  1. Visit the official Sanchar Saathi portal at sancharsaathi.gov.in
  2. Select "Know Mobile Connections in Your Name" from the citizen services section
  3. Enter an active mobile number registered in your name
  4. Complete the captcha and request an OTP
  5. Enter the OTP received on your mobile
  6. Review the mobile connections displayed on the portal
  7. Check whether you recognise the numbers displayed and still require each connection

Some digits may be hidden to protect your information. You should still be able to identify your connections from the visible digits and your existing mobile records.

What to Do If You Find an Unknown Number Registered to Your Name?

The portal allows you to report a connection that you do not recognise or no longer need. The available options and what they generally mean are as follow:

  • Required: This means the connection belongs to you and is still in use
  • Not required: It means you obtained the connection but no longer need it
  • Not my number: This means you never obtained or authorised the connection

Before reporting a number, check whether it is being used by a family member because sometimes several family connections may have been obtained using one person's identity, and reporting a genuine connection could lead to its disconnection.

You can submit the appropriate request and save its reference details. The relevant telecom operator verifies the report and takes further action, so the number may continue to appear while the request is being processed.

What to Do If You Cannot Receive the OTP?

You may be unable to use the service if your only registered number is lost, damaged or inactive. Contact your telecom operator and request a replacement SIM for the same number. You may need to complete identity verification before it is issued.

If an old or disconnected number still appears, contact the operator that issued it and keep any previous closure request or customer service reference number. You should also contact the operator if the information is incomplete or you cannot identify a masked number.

Difference Between Sanchar Saathi and Other Reporting Portal

Sanchar Saathi and the UIDAI portal have different roles. UIDAI manages Aadhaar services, while Sanchar Saathi helps you review telecom connections issued in your name.

Platform or serviceMain purpose
Sanchar SaathiCheck and report mobile connections issued in your name
UIDAIManage Aadhaar information and Aadhaar related services
CEIRBlock a lost or stolen handset using its IMEI
1930Report urgent financial cyber fraud
Cybercrime portalFile a formal cybercrime complaint

If an unknown connection has already been used to defraud, threaten or impersonate you, reporting it through Sanchar Saathi may not be enough. Report the incident to the police or through cybercrime.gov.in. You can call 1930 immediately if the incident involves an online fraud.

Final Thoughts

Sanchar Saathi portal allows you to review mobile connections registered under your identity. You can complete the check using an active mobile number and OTP, not by entering your Aadhaar number. If you find a number that you do not recognise, verify that it is not being used by a family member and report it through the portal. Taking action early can prevent an unauthorised connection from being misused in your name.
