Your Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) account holds years of retirement savings, which makes it an attractive target for fraudsters. Many members receive fake calls, SMS messages, emails or WhatsApp texts pretending to be from EPFO and asking for personal details. Knowing a few simple precautions can keep your account and savings safe.

EPF members can protect their accounts by using only the official EPFO portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in), never sharing their UAN, password, Aadhaar, PAN or OTP with anyone, and ignoring links from unsolicited SMS, email or WhatsApp messages, since EPFO never asks for such details over calls or messages.

How to Protect Your EPF Account from Online Fraud

1. Use Only Official EPFO Channels

Access your account only through the official EPFO website, www.epfindia.gov.in, the Unified Member Portal at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in, or the UMANG mobile app. Avoid third-party websites or apps that claim to offer EPF services.

2. Be Cautious with Unsolicited Links

Do not click on links received through unexpected SMS, email, WhatsApp or social media messages, even if they appear to be from EPFO. This tactic, called phishing, tricks people into visiting fake websites designed to steal login details.

3. Never Share Confidential Details

Your UAN (Universal Account Number, the unique ID linked to your EPF account), password, Aadhaar, PAN, bank account details and OTP (One-Time Password, a short code used to verify a transaction) should never be shared with anyone, including callers who claim to represent EPFO.

4. Examine the Website Address Carefully

Before entering any details, check the complete web address for misspellings, extra characters or unfamiliar domain extensions. A padlock icon or "https" in the address bar does not by itself confirm that a website is genuine, so verify the full domain name matches the official EPFO portal.

5. Remember EPFO's Own Advisory

EPFO has stated that it and its officials never ask members to share their UAN, password, Aadhaar, PAN, bank account details or OTP through calls, messages, WhatsApp or social media.

6. Use Strong, Unique Login Credentials

Set a strong password for your EPFO account and avoid reusing it elsewhere. Never save your login details on shared or public devices.

7. Log Out and Avoid Unsecured Access

Always log out of the portal after use, and avoid accessing your account from public computers or unsecured public Wi-Fi networks.

8. Monitor Your Account Regularly

Periodically check your EPF passbook and linked bank details for any unfamiliar changes or unauthorised activity, and act quickly if something looks incorrect.

What Should You Do If You Suspect EPF-Related Fraud?

If you believe you have received a fraudulent call, message or email related to your EPF account, act quickly:

  • Stop responding to the sender immediately and do not click on any further links they send.
  • If you have already entered your details on a suspicious page, change your EPFO password and any reused passwords right away.
  • Preserve evidence, such as screenshots of the message, the sender's number or email ID, and any linked website address.
  • Report the incident through EPFO's official grievance portal, EPFiGMS, at epfigms.gov.in.
  • File a complaint with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in, or call the national cybercrime helpline at 1930.
  • If bank details were shared, inform your bank immediately so they can monitor or block suspicious transactions.

Final Thoughts

Fraudsters rely on urgency and impersonation to trick EPF members into sharing sensitive information. Sticking to official EPFO portals, checking the complete website address before entering any details, and never sharing your UAN, password or OTP remain your strongest lines of defence. A few careful habits can go a long way in keeping your retirement savings secure.
