You can track your ITR refund status by logging in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal, going to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns, selecting the assessment year, and checking the Refund Status section, or by using the pre-login refund status option on the Protean (NSDL) TIN portal with your PAN.

When Can You Track Your ITR Refund?

Refund tracking becomes meaningful only after your return moves through the following stages:

Related Product Banner
  • Filing: You submit your ITR on the e-Filing portal.
  • E-verification: You verify the return, typically through Aadhaar OTP, net banking, a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or an Electronic Verification Code (EVC), within the prescribed verification window. An unverified return is not taken up for processing.
  • Processing: The Centralised Processing Centre (CPC), Bengaluru, examines the return and matches it against your Form 26AS, Annual Information Statement (AIS) and other departmental records.
  • Refund determination: If the processing confirms that tax paid exceeds tax payable, the refund amount is determined and an intimation under Section 143(1) is generated.
  • Refund issuance: The confirmed refund is transmitted to your bank account through the Refund Banker (State Bank of India) or, in rare cases, by cheque.

In short, filing your return only starts this sequence. A meaningful refund status will typically only appear once your return has been e-verified and taken up for processing.

What You Need to Check Your ITR Refund Status

Keep the following ready before you check your status:

  • Permanent Account Number (PAN)
  • The relevant Assessment Year (AY) — for example, AY 2026-27 for income earned in FY 2025-26
  • Your e-Filing portal User ID and password, for the detailed login-based status
  • A mobile number registered with the e-Filing portal or linked with Aadhaar, if you use an OTP-based quick-check option

Always verify the current field requirements on the official portal, as login and verification options can be updated by the Income Tax Department from time to time.

How to Track ITR Refund Status on the Income Tax e-Filing Portal

The most detailed refund status is available after logging in to the e-Filing portal at incometax.gov.in. Follow these steps:

  • Go to the official e-Filing portal and click Login.
  • Enter your PAN as the User ID, followed by your password, and complete the login.
  • On the Dashboard, click e-File, then select Income Tax Returns, and click View Filed Returns.
  • Select the relevant Assessment Year from the list of returns you have filed.
  • Click View Details against that return to see its current stage, such as Filed, Verified, Under Processing or Processed.
  • Within the same view, check the Refund Status section to see whether a refund has been determined, issued, failed or adjusted.
  • From the same screen, you can typically download the acknowledgement, the Section 143(1) intimation and other processing-related records once these are available.

The exact menu labels and screen layout may be updated by the Income Tax Department from time to time; always follow the current on-screen navigation on the official portal.

Can You Track the ITR Refund Without Logging In?

Yes. Two pre-login or lighter-weight options are available.

a. "Know Your Refund Status" on the e-Filing portal

The e-Filing portal offers a quick-check option, generally accessible from the portal's help or quick-links section, where you can enter your PAN, the Assessment Year and your registered mobile number, and verify an OTP to view a summary refund status.

b. Protean (formerly NSDL) TIN portal

The Refund Banker facility also allows a PAN-based refund status check on the Protean (previously NSDL) Tax Information Network portal, without logging in to the e-Filing portal. You enter your PAN and the relevant Assessment Year to view the refund status, amount and mode of payment (bank credit or cheque). Status here is generally visible about ten days after the Assessing Officer has sent the refund instruction to the Refund Banker, so it may lag behind the e-Filing portal for a return that has only just been processed.

Portal names, URLs and the exact facilities offered under Protean/NSDL have changed over time as the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) TIN services were transitioned to Protean eGov Technologies. Confirm the current, active link on the official Income Tax Department or Protean website before use, rather than relying on an old bookmark.

What Do Different ITR and Refund Status Messages Mean?

The table below explains commonly seen status messages and what they generally indicate. Exact wording on the portal may vary slightly.

StatusWhat it MeansWhat You Should Do
Submitted / Return successfully e-verifiedThe Income Tax Department has received and validated your ITR. Processing has not started or has not finished. No action needed. Check back after a few days for a change in status.
Under ProcessingThe Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) is examining your return, including the figures you have reported and the tax already paid or deducted.Wait. There is no fixed daily update; avoid submitting a duplicate or revised return unless an error is confirmed.
Refund Determined / Processed with Refund DueThe CPC has completed processing and confirmed that a refund is payable. An intimation under Section 143(1) is generated.Read the intimation carefully. If the figures match your return, no action is required.
Refund IssuedThe confirmed refund amount has been sent by the CPC to the Refund Banker (State Bank of India) for credit to your bank account, or a refund cheque has been dispatched.Confirm credit in your bank statement or Form 26AS. Allow a few working days for the amount to reflect.
Refund FailedThe refund could not be credited, usually because of incorrect, unvalidated or mismatched bank account details.Correct or pre-validate your bank account and submit a Refund Reissue Request on the e-Filing portal.
Refund Adjusted Against Outstanding DemandAll or part of the refund has been used to settle an existing tax demand under Section 245 of the Income Tax Act.Review the intimation or demand notice on the portal. Respond if you disagree with the demand.
No Demand, No RefundYour tax paid matches your final tax liability. There is no refund due and no additional tax payable. No action required. This is a normal outcome of processing.

Why is Your ITR Refund Delayed?

A delayed refund does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with your return. Common, verified reasons include:

  • The return has not yet been e-verified
  • The return is still under processing at the CPC
  • The bank account nominated for the refund has not been pre-validated
  • Incorrect bank account number, IFSC code or other bank details
  • A mismatch between PAN details and the bank account details
  • Additional verification, data-matching or risk-based checks by the department
  • The return has been marked defective, or a response to a departmental query is pending
  • An outstanding tax demand from an earlier assessment year, against which the refund may be adjusted
  • A technical failure at the bank or payment-processing stage after the refund was sent

A delay can arise from any of these routine, procedural reasons and does not by itself indicate scrutiny or wrongdoing.

What Should You Do If the Refund Has Failed?

If your refund status shows Refund Failed, or you receive a communication to that effect from the CPC or the Refund Banker, follow these steps on the e-Filing portal:

  • Log in to the e-Filing portal and open the Refund Status or intimation details to check the specific reason recorded for the failure.
  • Go to your Dashboard, open the Bank Account section, and confirm whether your bank account shows as validated. If it does not, complete pre-validation of the correct, active bank account.
  • Go to Services and select Refund Reissue.
  • Click Create Refund Reissue Request, and select the record relating to the failed refund.
  • Select the bank account — only pre-validated accounts are available for selection — in which you want the refund credited, and click Proceed to Verification.
  • Complete e-Verification using the option available to you, such as Aadhaar OTP, a Digital Signature Certificate, or an Electronic Verification Code generated through your bank or demat account.
  • Note the Transaction ID generated on successful submission, and track the request status from View Refund Reissue Request on the same page.

A refund reissue request does not reprocess your return; it only re-initiates payment of the refund amount already confirmed in your Section 143(1) intimation, using corrected bank details.

How Long Does an ITR Refund Take?

There is a difference between the statutory outer limit for processing and the time refunds are commonly observed to take in practice.

1. Statutory Position

Under the Income Tax Act, an intimation under Section 143(1) — which confirms whether a refund, demand or neither is due — can be issued up to nine months from the end of the financial year in which the return is filed. For example, for a return filed during FY 2025-26, this intimation can be issued up to 31 December 2026. This is an outer limit for processing, not a guaranteed date for refund credit; in a large majority of cases, processing and refund issuance are completed well before this deadline.

2. Commonly Observed Processing Time

The Income Tax Department does not commit to a fixed number of days for refund credit, since this depends on verification, data-matching and the complexity of the specific return. As an official reference point, the department has previously stated that the average processing time for returns had reduced to about 10 days for Assessment Year 2023-24, down from 16 days in AY 2022-23 and 82 days in AY 2019-20, reflecting a broader digitisation and processing-speed trend, though these are historical averages and not a timeline promised for every return in every assessment year.

If your refund has not appeared well beyond the time you would normally expect based on your own filing history, check your refund status on the portal first for the specific reason before assuming a fixed timeline has been missed.

Final Thoughts

Tracking an ITR refund is straightforward once you know where to look: the e-Filing portal's Refund Status section gives the most complete picture, while the Protean (NSDL) TIN portal offers a quick, pre-login check. Most delays trace back to a return that is still under processing or a bank account that needs validation or correction. Keep your bank details updated, e-verify promptly, and use the official portal's grievance route if a refund genuinely appears stuck beyond a reasonable time.

FAQs

Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal with your PAN and password, go to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns, and select the relevant Assessment Year. Open View Details to see the Refund Status section. You can also use the Protean (NSDL) TIN portal's pre-login refund status check using your PAN and Assessment Year.

Yes. Your PAN is central to both tracking methods. On the e-Filing portal, PAN is your User ID for login. On the Protean (NSDL) TIN portal, you can check refund status without logging in by entering your PAN along with the relevant Assessment Year.

This usually means your return has not yet been e-verified, or it is still under processing at the Centralised Processing Centre. A detailed refund status generally becomes visible only after processing is complete and a refund has been determined. Check the return's processing status first before assuming a refund issue.

Check the reason for failure on the e-Filing portal, correct or pre-validate your bank account, and then submit a Refund Reissue Request under Services > Refund Reissue. Select the correct validated bank account, complete e-Verification, and note the Transaction ID to track your request.

There is no fixed number of days guaranteed by law; the statutory outer limit for processing (via the Section 143(1) intimation) is nine months from the end of the financial year in which the return was filed. In practice, processing has historically been much faster for straightforward, error-free, e-verified returns, but the exact time varies case to case.
