CKYC (Central Know Your Customer) allows your verified KYC information to be stored in a central registry so that banks, insurers, mutual fund houses, NBFCs and other regulated financial institutions can access this record with your consent.

You usually complete CKYC when you apply for a financial product and the institution verifies your information and uploads it to the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR). If you do not already have a record, you have to initiate the CKYC process and you are assigned a 14-digit KYC Identifier. To complete the CKYC, you have to submit a few documents, and these documents may vary according to your profile and the product.

Whether you're new to the CKYC process or looking for a refresher, in this guide, we've explored the essential CKYC document list that every applicant needs.

What are the Documents Required for CKYC?

1. Completed CKYC Application Form

You need to complete the CKYC application form provided by the financial institution. It generally collects details such as your:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Residential address
  • Occupation
  • Tax residency
  • Mobile number
  • Email address

The information entered in the form should match your supporting documents. Differences in your name, date of birth or address may delay verification.

2. PAN (Permanent Account Number) or Form 97

You will generally need to provide your PAN. If you do not have PAN, you may submit Form 97 where the applicable rules permit it. Form 97 replaced the earlier Form 60 from 1 April 2026 under the Income-tax Rules, 2026. Form 97 is a declaration relating to the absence of PAN. It is not a substitute for an identity or address document. You will still need to provide an accepted document to establish your identity and address.

3. Officially Valid Document

You can generally submit any one of the following officially valid documents:

  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • Proof of possession of Aadhaar number
  • Voter ID issued by the Election Commission of India
  • NREGA job card signed by an authorised State Government officer
  • Letter issued by the National Population Register containing your name and address

The document should be valid and contain the required identity and address details. Aadhaar is one of the accepted options, but it is not compulsory in every case. You can use another officially valid document accepted under the applicable KYC rules.

4. Recent Photograph

You may need to provide a recent passport-size photograph. The photograph should be clear and reflect your current appearance. If you complete CKYC through a digital or video-based process, the institution may capture your photograph during verification.

5. Signature or Thumb Impression

You will need to sign the CKYC form and provide a specimen signature where requested. A thumb impression may also be accepted through the prescribed process. The institution may ask you to self-attest copies of your documents. It may also require you to present the originals or use permitted electronic documents for verification.

What Additional Documents You May Need for CKYC?

Additional documents may be required depending on your circumstances.

  • If your official document has an old address, you can use a recent utility bill, tax receipt, pension order, or eligible employer document to prove your current address. You may need to provide an updated official document later.
  • If there is name mismatch or you have changed your name legally, you may need to submit a Gazette notification and for name change after marriage you have to submit a State Government-issued marriage certificate along with the document carrying your previous name.
  • For a minor, the institution may request proof of age and the KYC documents of the parent or legal guardian. NRIs, PIOs and foreign nationals may need to provide passport, visa, overseas address and residency documents. The certification requirements may also differ.

When updating an existing CKYC record, you should provide the document supporting the change in your name, address, contact details or other personal information.

How to Submit Your CKYC Documents?

You can normally submit your documents through a regulated financial institution rather than approaching CERSAI directly. The process generally involves the following steps:

  • Complete the CKYC application form
  • Submit the required documents and photograph
  • Complete physical, digital or video-based verification
  • Allow the institution to upload your verified information to CKYCR
  • Receive your KYC Identifier after the record is created

Verification may be completed using physical documents, DigiLocker, Aadhaar-based verification, video KYC or another permitted method offered by the institution.

CKYC Documents and Product-Specific Documents

The standard CKYC documents establish your identity and address. However, the institution may need additional information for the financial product you are applying for.

It may request:

  • Income proof
  • Occupation or business details
  • Source-of-funds information
  • Bank statements
  • Tax-residency declaration
  • FATCA or CRS declaration
  • Product-specific application forms

These documents are not necessarily part of the basic CKYC list. They may be required for the account, investment, insurance policy or loan.

What to Check Before CKYC Submission?

Before submitting your CKYC application, check that:

  • Your name is consistent across the documents
  • Your date of birth is correct
  • Your current address is complete
  • Your documents have not expired
  • Your photograph is recent
  • The copies are clear and self-attested where required
  • Your mobile number and email address are active
  • You are using Form 97 only if it applies to you

Correct and consistent information can reduce requests for clarification or resubmission.

Final Thoughts

For CKYC, you will generally need a completed application form, PAN or Form 97 where permitted, an officially valid identity and address document, a recent photograph and your signature or thumb impression.

Additional documents may be required if your address has changed, you are applying for a minor or you have a special residency status. Checking the institution’s requirements before submitting your application can help you complete the process without unnecessary delays.
