Auto-debit facilities make it easier to pay loan EMIs, insurance premiums, utility bills, SIP instalments and subscription charges on time. But you may need to stop one after closing a loan, changing bank accounts, ending a subscription or selecting another payment method.

You can cancel or revoke an auto-debit mandate. The process depends on whether the payment uses NACH, UPI AutoPay, a debit or credit card, or a bank standing instruction. Cancelling the mandate only withdraws permission to debit your account. It does not automatically cancel the loan, insurance policy, investment, subscription or other agreement connected to the payment.

This blog explains how to identify and cancel NACH or e-NACH mandates, UPI AutoPay instructions, card-based auto-debits and bank standing instructions, along with the steps to take if a debit continues after cancellation.

What is a NACH Mandate?

The NACH (National Automated Clearing House) is a payment system operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It allows an organisation to collect recurring payments from a customer's bank account after receiving authorisation.

NACH Mandates are Commonly Used For:

  • Loan EMIs
  • Mutual fund SIPs
  • Insurance premiums
  • Utility bills
  • Membership fees
  • Subscription payments

An e-NACH mandate performs the same function but is registered digitally through net banking, a debit card or another supported authentication method.

How to Identify the Type of Auto-Debit

Start by identifying how the payment is being collected. Check your bank statement, debit notification or transaction description. A NACH debit may contain terms such as 'NACH', 'ACH', 'ECS', the collecting organisation's name or a mandate reference. A UPI AutoPay debit will usually appear in the mandates section of the UPI app used to approve it.

Card-based recurring payments may appear in the card issuer's recurring-payment or standing-instruction portal. A standing instruction created directly with the bank may appear under scheduled payments or service requests.

Note the Following Details Before Requesting Cancellation:

  • Name of the collecting organisation
  • Amount or maximum authorised amount
  • Debit frequency
  • Bank account or card used
  • Next payment date
  • Mandate or transaction reference number

For a NACH mandate, also look for the Unique Mandate Reference Number (UMRN). This number identifies the mandate and is generally required when it is modified or cancelled.

How to Cancel a NACH Mandate Online

Many banks allow customers to manage NACH mandates through mobile banking or net banking. The names of the menus may differ between banks, but the broad process is usually as follows:

  • Log in to the bank's mobile app or net banking portal
  • Open the Mandates, Recurring Payments, Standing Instructions or Service Requests section
  • View the active mandates linked to your account
  • Select the mandate you want to stop
  • Check the collecting organisation, amount and payment frequency
  • Select Cancel, Revoke or Withdraw
  • Complete the required authentication
  • Save the acknowledgement or cancellation reference number

Do not treat submission of the request as final confirmation. Check whether the mandate's status changes to 'cancelled', 'revoked' or 'inactive'.

How to Cancel a NACH Mandate Through a Bank Branch

If your bank does not provide an online option, visit the branch where your account is held and submit a written cancellation request.

The Bank May Ask For:

  • Account holder's name
  • Bank account number
  • Registered mobile number
  • UMRN
  • Name of the lender or collecting organisation
  • Mandate amount
  • Reason for cancellation
  • Account holder's signature

Ask the branch to provide a stamped and dated acknowledgement. This will help if another debit is presented after the cancellation request.

How to Cancel Other Types of Auto-Debits

1. Cancelling UPI AutoPay

A UPI AutoPay mandate can generally be revoked through the UPI app in which it was approved.

  • Open the UPI app
  • Go to AutoPay, Mandates or Recurring Payments
  • Open the active mandates
  • Select the relevant merchant or payment
  • Review the mandate details
  • Choose Revoke, Cancel or Pause, as applicable
  • Authorise the request using your UPI PIN if required

Save the confirmation and check that the mandate no longer appears as active.

2. Cancelling a Card Auto-Debit

For a recurring payment linked to a debit or credit card, log in to the card issuer's recurring-payment or mandate-management portal. Select the merchant mandate and use the available cancellation option. Some banks also provide a cancellation link in the pre-debit notification sent before a recurring card payment.

3. Cancelling a Bank Standing Instruction

Open the scheduled-payments or standing-instructions section, select the instruction and submit the cancellation request. Keep the confirmation until you have checked the next account statement.

What Happens After You Cancel the Mandate?

The mandate may not become inactive immediately. Processing time can vary depending on the bank, payment system and organisation collecting the money.

After Submitting the Request:

  • Save the acknowledgement and reference number
  • Check the status through the bank or payment app
  • Ask the collecting organisation for confirmation
  • Monitor your account around the next scheduled debit date
  • Keep all emails, SMS messages and complaint records

Where possible, submit the request several days before the next debit date. A payment request that has already entered processing may still be presented before the cancellation is completed.

What If Money Is Debited After Cancellation of an Auto-Debit or NACH Mandate?

Contact your bank immediately if a NACH debit takes place after the mandate has been revoked.

Important Points Before Cancelling an Auto-Debit

  • Cancelling a loan EMI mandate does not close the loan. If an EMI remains payable, arrange another payment method. Missing the payment may result in late fees, penal charges and an adverse entry in your credit history.
  • Stopping an SIP mandate prevents future instalments from being collected, but it does not redeem the mutual fund units you already hold.
  • Cancelling an insurance auto-debit does not automatically close the policy. Failure to pay the premium could cause the policy to lapse after the applicable grace period.
  • For subscriptions and memberships, separately terminate the service according to the provider's cancellation terms. Otherwise, charges may remain payable even though the auto-debit has been stopped.

Final Thoughts

To cancel an auto-debit, first identify whether it is a NACH mandate, UPI AutoPay instruction, card mandate or bank standing instruction. Submit the cancellation through the relevant bank or payment app and notify the collecting organisation separately. Retain the cancellation acknowledgement and monitor your account until the mandate is shown as inactive. If a NACH debit occurs after revocation, raise a formal complaint with the bank and escalate it through the RBI complaint system when necessary.

FAQs

Yes. Depending on the facilities offered by the bank, you may be able to cancel it through mobile banking, net banking or a branch request. Keep the acknowledgement until the cancellation is confirmed.

The UMRN may appear in the mandate registration confirmation, bank statement, lender's records or active-mandates section of your bank account. You can also request it from the bank or collecting organisation.

There is no single processing period that applies to every bank and mandate. Ask your bank for the applicable timeline and submit the request before the next scheduled debit. Check the status rather than relying only on the submission confirmation.

You may request withdrawal of the debit mandate, but the loan repayment obligation will continue. Arrange another payment method with the lender to avoid missed EMIs, charges and possible effects on your credit record.

Report the debit to the bank immediately and provide the cancellation proof, UMRN and transaction details. Obtain a complaint number and request reversal. If the bank does not resolve the complaint, use the RBI Complaint Management System for escalation.
