The details may include the company's name, ROC (Registrar of Companies) registration number, old company name, inactive CIN, or Corporate PAN. However, the MCA portal and the company's latest official documents should be the primary sources for verifying a company's CIN and registration details.

This blog will take you through how to find a company's CIN through the MCA portal, along with other ways you can find and verify a company's CIN.

What is a Company's CIN Number?

CIN (Corporate Identification Number) is a unique identification number assigned by the Registrar of Companies (ROC) when a company is successfully incorporated under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).

A CIN is a 21-character alphanumeric code. Its different characters represent specific information about the company and its registration.

For example, a CIN may look like U12345TG2026PTC123456, where:

U — Indicates that the company is unlisted
12345 — Represents the company's five-digit industry code, based on the applicable industry classification
TG — Represents the state code, indicating Telangana
2026 — Represents the year of incorporation

How to Find a Company's CIN Number Through the MCA Portal?

You can use the Find CIN service on the MCA portal to search for a company's CIN. The page provides multiple search options based on the company details you have.

Step 1: Go to the official Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) website.

Step 2: Click MCA Services from the main menu.

Step 3: Hover over FO Services

Step 4: Click Find CIN to open the CIN search page.

Step 5: The Find CIN page provides four ways to search. Select the option that matches the company details you have.

Search Based on Registration No. Select the relevant ROC from the drop-down list and enter the company's registration number.
Search Based on Existing Company/LLP Name. Select the option that describes how the name you are entering relates to the company name. You can choose Ends with, Is, Starts with, or Contains anywhere, and then enter the company's existing name.
Search Based on Inactive CIN. Enter the company's inactive CIN in the required field.
Search Based on Old Company/LLP Name. Select the relevant search criterion, and enter the company's old name.

Step 6: Enter the CAPTCHA and click Submit

Step 7: The CIN, along with the other company details, will be displayed.

Can You Find a Company's CIN Using PAN?

Some third-party corporate-data tools such as Tally Solutions allow you to find a company's CIN using its Corporate PAN. The process is simple:

Open a third-party PAN-to-CIN lookup tool
Enter the company's Corporate PAN
Click Search
Check the CIN and company details shown in the results.

Point to remember: If you use a third-party PAN-to-CIN tool, it is better to cross-verify the CIN and company details on the MCA portal before relying solely on the details provided by third-party portals.

Can You Find a Company's CIN in Its Official Documents?

Yes. You can find a company's CIN on its official documents. The Certificate of Incorporation is one of the main documents you can look at to verify the CIN.

You can also find CIN on other company documents, such as:

Certificate of Incorporation
Annual reports
Company letterheads
Invoices and bills
Other official company publications
You can also find the company's CIN on its website or other online platforms.

Use the latest official document available, especially if the company has changed its name or other registration details. For final verification, you can cross-check the CIN against the company's records on the MCA portal.

Under Section 12 of the Companies Act, 2013, a company is required to mention its CIN along with other prescribed details on business letters, billheads, letter papers, notices and other official publications. If a company fails to comply, it can be liable to pay a penalty of ₹1,000 for every day the default continues, subject to a maximum of ₹1 lakh.
