Every bank transaction initiated through any digital channel has a reference number that helps identify and track the payment, whether the transaction is successful or unsuccessful. Once a payment is initiated, a unique reference is assigned to that transaction.
The name of this reference can differ based on the payment channel. UTR is the specific term used for NEFT and RTGS transactions. For transactions made through IMPS and UPI, the reference number is termed as RRN (Retrieval Reference Number).
This blog will explain in detail what a UTR is, what it is used for, how to find it, and how you can use it to track a payment.
What is a UTR Number?
A UTR number, or Unique Transaction Reference number, is a unique reference given to a financial transaction in India, specifically for RTGS and NEFT transactions. A UTR can contain a combination of alphabets and numbers, depending on the payment channel used.
Not every transaction reference should be treated as a UTR number. Different payment channels may use different terms for their transaction reference numbers.
Transaction Reference Numbers for Different Payment Channels
A UTR is specifically associated with NEFT and RTGS. The references used to identify payments across different banking channels include:

How to Track a Payment Using a UTR Number?
The process of tracking a payment is broadly the same across different payment channels. However, where you find the transaction reference and how you check its status can vary depending on the channel used.
To track a payment using a UTR, you can generally follow these steps:
- Find the UTR number: Check your bank statement, transaction history, SMS, email, or payment receipt for the relevant UTR.
- Check the transaction status: Use your bank’s mobile banking, internet banking, or other available channels to check the status of the transaction linked to the UTR.
- Contact your bank: If the payment is pending, failed, or debited from your account but the recipient has not received it, contact your bank. Provide the UTR and other payment details so the bank can trace the transaction.
- Ask the recipient to check with their bank: If the payment shows as successful from your side but the recipient has not received it, share the UTR with them. They can provide it to their bank to check the incoming transaction.
Where Can You Find a UTR Number?
You can find the UTR number through the following channels:
- Mobile banking app or internet banking: Log in to your bank account, go to your transaction history, and select the relevant payment. You can find the UTR or transaction reference in the payment details.
- You can also view the UTR number on:
How to Identify a UTR Number?
For an RTGS transaction, you can look for a 22-character code in the transaction details. For an NEFT transaction, you can look for a 16-character code.
The code format for RTGS is:
XXXXRCYYYYMMDDNNNNNNNN
For example: UJVNR52025090812345678 is an illustrative RTGS UTR. UJVN represents the bank code, R indicates RTGS, 5 represents the channel code, 20250908 represents the transaction date, and 12345678 is the transaction sequence number.
Is UTR Assigned to Failed or Pending Payments?
Yes, failed or pending transactions also have a UTR number. In fact, the UTR becomes especially useful in such cases, as banks can use it to identify and trace the transaction. A payment that fails before it is processed, such as due to an incorrect PIN or a network or bank issue, will not have a UTR number.
A UTR number does not indicate the status of a payment. When a transaction is initiated, a reference is assigned to identify the transaction. The transaction can then be successful, pending, failed, or returned, while the UTR remains the reference for that transaction.
Final Thoughts
Banking transactions can involve different reference numbers, and knowing what each one means can make payment-related issues easier to handle. A UTR, or Unique Transaction Reference number is particularly useful when you need to follow up on a NEFT or RTGS transaction. Keeping your transaction details safely recorded can also make communication with your bank simpler when you need help with a payment.
