Effective from September 17, 2026, EPFO has raised the wage ceiling for mandatory coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. The ceiling was earlier increased from ₹6,500 to ₹15,000 in September 2014.

The increase in wage ceiling can increase your employer's EPF and EPS contribution and your overall EPF balance. It may also affect your take-home salary if both your contribution and employer's contribution are included in the CTC.

Read on to understand what exactly the EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organisation) wage ceiling increase means, how it can affect your EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) and EPS (Employees' Pension Scheme) contributions, and what you should not confuse this change with.

What Did the Earlier EPF ₹15,000 Wage Ceiling Mean?

The ₹15,000 wage limit was the wage ceiling used for calculating the mandatory employer contribution to EPF and EPS. The wages considered for this purpose generally include Basic Pay + Dearness Allowance (DA).

Earlier, the employer's compulsory contribution was 12% of the wages, up to ₹15,000. So, even if your salary was higher, say ₹25,000 per month, the employer was generally required to make the statutory contribution only up to the ₹15,000 wage ceiling.

For example, 12% of your ₹25,000 salary would be ₹3,000. However, under the earlier ₹15,000 ceiling, the mandatory employer contribution was calculated only on ₹15,000, 12% of ₹15,000 would be ₹1,800.

From the employer's share, 8.33% of the eligible wage was allocated towards EPS, while the remaining amount went towards EPF. Your contribution is 12% of your eligible wages and goes entirely towards EPF.

What Does the Increased ₹25,000 EPF Ceiling Limit Mean?

The increase in the wage limit to ₹25,000 for EPF means that the employer's compulsory contribution to PF can now be made on wages up to ₹25,000, instead of the earlier ₹15,000.

For example, if your eligible wages are ₹25,000, the employer's 12% contribution would be ₹3,000, compared with ₹1,800 under the earlier ₹15,000 wage ceiling. The difference is ₹1,200 more in the employer's contribution, where the new wage ceiling applies.

How Does the EPF Contribution Change With the ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 Wage Ceilings?

The table below shows how the employer's mandatory contribution changes when calculated up to the ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 wage ceilings.

How New EPF Wage Ceiling Affects Your EPS Contribution?

A major portion of the employer's contribution goes towards EPS, so the increased wage ceiling will also affect the amount contributed towards your pension. The employer contributes 12% of the applicable wages, of which 8.33% is allocated towards EPS, subject to the applicable ceiling.

  1. Under the earlier ₹15,000 wage ceiling, 8.33% of the eligible wage meant that the maximum EPS contribution was ₹1,250 per month
  2. With the wage ceiling increased to ₹25,000, 8.33% of the revised ceiling works out to approximately ₹2,083 per month towards the EPS contribution.

How Does the EPF Wage Ceiling Increase Affect Your In-Hand Salary?

The increase in the EPF wage ceiling can also affect your in-hand salary, depending on how your salary is structured. Many employers include both the employee's and employer's EPF contributions in the overall CTC.

While the employer's EPF contribution is not directly deducted from your salary, it forms part of your total compensation. So, if your CTC remains unchanged and the employer's mandatory EPF contribution increases from ₹1,800 to ₹3,000, an additional ₹1,200 may be allocated towards EPF.

In such a case, the cash component of your salary can be reduced by ₹1,200, which means you may receive a lower amount as in-hand salary each month. However, that ₹1,200 is not lost. It is being contributed towards your EPF, increasing your retirement savings.

Alternatively, if the employer increases your total CTC to accommodate the higher employer contribution, you may see a higher CTC reflected in the salary slip from the coming months.

What Should You Not Confuse the ₹25,000 EPF Wage Limit With?

Below are a few things you should not confuse the new ₹25,000 EPF wage ceiling with:

  • It is not the limit for becoming eligible for EPF: You can be eligible for EPF even if your salary is below ₹25,000. The eligibility criteria are different.
  • It is not the maximum salary limit for EPF: You can continue to have EPF even if your salary is above ₹25,000.
  • Your entire salary is not considered for the ₹25,000 limit: EPF is generally calculated on (Basic Pay + DA) and other components, such as commission in some cases.
  • A ₹25,000 salary does not automatically mean a ₹3,000 employer contribution: The contribution depends on the salary components considered for EPF.
  • The employer can contribute more than the statutory limit: Higher contributions may be possible when the applicable conditions for contribution on higher wages are met.
  • The ₹25,000 ceiling does not limit your contribution to ₹3,000: Your EPF contribution is generally 12% of your applicable EPF wages.
  • EPF and EPS are different: Your 12% contribution goes towards EPF, while a portion of the employer's contribution goes towards EPS and remaining to EPF.
  • Your contribution does not go towards EPS: Your 12% contribution goes towards EPF, while the EPS contribution comes from the employer's share.
  • A higher employee contribution does not automatically mean a higher employer contribution: If you contribute on wages above the statutory ceiling, the employer is not automatically required to match the higher amount unless the applicable conditions for higher-wage contributions are met.

Final Thoughts

The increase in the EPF wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 can increase the amount contributed towards EPF and EPS for employees to whom the revised ceiling applies. A higher EPF contribution can also help you earn interest on a larger EPF balance.

The accumulated EPF balance can also be used for certain eligible purposes under the new EPFO rules, making it an important employee benefit for both retirement savings and financial needs during employment.

FAQs

The new EPF wage ceiling of ₹25,000 per month is effective from September 17, 2026. It replaces the earlier wage ceiling of ₹15,000 for mandatory EPF coverage.

Not necessarily. The ₹25,000 wage ceiling does not mean every employee will automatically get a higher EPF contribution. The actual contribution depends on your EPF wages, salary structure and applicable EPFO rules.

It depends on your salary structure. If the higher employer contribution is included within a fixed CTC, the cash component of your salary may reduce.

The revised ceiling can apply to eligible employees under the updated mandatory coverage rules, subject to the applicable EPFO provisions.

The higher wage ceiling can increase the amount contributed towards your EPF, where the revised ceiling applies. This can help build a larger EPF balance over time and earn interest on the higher accumulated amount.
