The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has developed an Aadhaar-based digital portal to help members access old or inoperative provident fund accounts. The Ministry of Labour and Employment shared details about the platform in a written response on 27 July 2026.
The portal is intended to help eligible members track old PF accounts, transfer the balance to an active Universal Account Number (UAN), or apply for settlement. While the platform has been developed, its official launch date and public web address have not yet been announced.
This new update comes alongside the rollout of EPFO 3.0, a wider digital upgrade designed to speed up claim settlement and improve access to member services, with UPI- and ATM-based withdrawals among its proposed features. Together, these initiatives reflect EPFO's broader digital modernisation efforts.
Why the New Aadhaar-Based Portal Matters?
Inoperative or unclaimed PF accounts have been a long-standing issue. An account is generally classified as inoperative when no contribution has been made to it for three years. This can usually be because the member changed jobs, retired, or moved abroad without transferring or withdrawing the balance. Over time, the number of such accounts and the total amount held in them have grown substantially.
Many contributors are unaware that they still have money sitting in an old account, particularly if the account predates the introduction of the Universal Account Number (UAN) system in 2014. This new portal is EPFO's attempt to address that gap by giving members a direct, verified way to trace and act on such accounts.
What the Portal Does?
The portal will use Aadhaar to verify a member's identity and allow secure access to old PF accounts. Once launched, it is expected to allow members to carry out the following functions:
It is important to note that a Joint Declaration submitted through the portal will still go through the standard verification process. Submitting a request online does not guarantee approval. EPFO will continue to verify the accuracy of the details before processing any change.

What is the Role of Aadhaar for the New EPFO Portal?
Aadhaar will be used to confirm a member's identity before granting access to an old account. This is intended to reduce dependence on physical documents and manual verification by EPFO field offices, for members trying to trace old accounts.
Aadhaar verification will confirm who a member is. It will not correct factual errors in EPFO's records, such as an incorrect date of joining or leaving an organisation, or contributions that were not properly recorded. Corrections of this nature will continue to require a separate request, supported by documentation, and will go through EPFO's usual verification process.
Who Can Use the EPFO's New Aadhaar-Based Portal?
The portal is designed for members who already have some record of an old PF account, such as a previous member ID, and want to trace, transfer, or settle it. The portal will help members act on accounts they know exist, rather than help members discover accounts they may have forgotten.
It has also not been officially confirmed that old accounts will be merged with a member's active account automatically upon verification. Based on the information available so far, the portal is designed to help members access, transfer, or settle eligible balances themselves, rather than to combine records without member action.
Is the New EPFO Portal Available Now?
The portal has been developed but has not yet been launched publicly. EPFO has not announced a launch date, an official web address, or a complete list of documents required to use it. Members should therefore treat any claims of the portal being "live" with caution until EPFO makes an official announcement.
Final Thoughts
EPFO's new portal is intended to make it easier for members to trace, transfer, or settle old PF accounts using Aadhaar-based verification, along with online submission of KYC updates through Joint Declarations. It is expected to reduce paperwork and reliance on manual processes at EPFO offices. Details such as the launch date, the official portal address, and the exact documentation required remain unannounced.
Members should wait for official confirmation from EPFO before using any link claiming to offer this service, and can use the time in the meantime to gather details of any old accounts they may hold.
