Many people still have an Aadhaar photo that was taken years ago. An old Aadhaar photo does not automatically cause a problem, but it can create unnecessary hassle during in-person verification, especially when the face on the card no longer matches your current appearance closely.

This is the reason the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) allows residents to update Aadhaar photo through the biometric update process at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.

Why an Old Aadhaar Photo May Create Problems?

When your Aadhaar photo is too old, unclear, or visibly different from how you look today, it can slow down facial authentication-based checks during banking, telecom, and other KYC-related interactions. The document may still be valid, but the photo may no longer be helping the way it should.

This is also why UIDAI treats photo change as part of a biometric update, and not as a basic online edit.

Can You Update Your Aadhaar Photo Online?

Aadhaar photo update cannot be done online. Biometric details which include photograph, fingerprint, and iris, must be updated at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. You do not need to return to the same place where your Aadhaar was originally made. You can visit the nearest authorised Aadhaar Enrolment or Update Centre and request a biometric update there.

How to Update Your Aadhaar Photo

Although the photo update cannot be done online, with the mAadhaar app, you can book an appointment for the update process at your nearest Aadhar Enrolment or Update Centre. After booking your appointment the Aadhaar photo update process is simple:

  • Visit an authorised Aadhaar Enrolment or Update Centre
Aadhaar photo updates are treated as biometric updates, so they must be done in person at an official centre
  • Ask for a biometric update to change your current Aadhaar photo
This tells the operator exactly what kind of update you want to make
  • Provide your Aadhaar details for the update request
Your Aadhaar number and related details are needed to pull up your record and begin the process
  • Have your new photograph captured at the centre
The updated image is taken on-site as part of the official biometric update process
  • Finish the process and keep the acknowledgement slip or URN safely
This slip helps you track the update later and serves as proof that the request was submitted.

UIDAI's current charges schedule lists the general fee for biometric update, which includes fingerprint, iris, and photo, at ₹125. It also lists some age-based mandatory biometric updates as free in specific cases.

Who Should Consider Updating Aadhaar Photo?

You should consider updating your Aadhaar photo if:

  • Your current photo was taken many years ago
  • The image is blurred, dark, or poorly captured
  • Your current appearance has changed significantly with age
  • The old image may have caused hesitation or rejection during verification
  • You want your main ID to reflect your current appearance more clearly

There is no limit on how many times a resident can update their Aadhaar picture, so if the image is no longer useful, there is no reason to keep postponing it.

Final Thoughts

An Aadhaar photo update is a small task, but it can remove a recurring point of friction for the KYC process and other identity verification which uses Aadhaar as a key document. If your photo is clearly outdated or poor in quality, replacing it is a practical step.

Visit an authorised centre, request a biometric update, pay the applicable fee, and get the record refreshed properly.
