The growing popularity of UPI has made it a target for fraudsters. Most scammers try to trick users into sharing confidential information or approving fraudulent transactions. Knowing how these common UPI scams work and the precautions to take can help you use UPI safely.

What are the Common Type of UPI Scams in India?

1. Fake Payment Request Scam

Fraudsters send a 'Collect Request' claiming they are transferring money to your account. Believing they need to approve the request to receive funds, victims unknowingly authorise a payment instead.

How to avoid it:

  • Read every payment request carefully before approving it
  • Remember that receiving money does not require you to approve a payment request

2. QR Code Scam

Scammers send a QR code claiming you must scan it to receive money, claim a refund, or receive cashback. In reality, scanning the QR code initiates a payment, it does not help you receive money.

How to avoid it:

  • Never scan QR codes you receive from unknown individuals
  • Verify the purpose of a QR code before scanning it

3. Fake Customer Care Scam

Fraudsters create fake customer care numbers online or impersonate bank representatives through calls and messages. They often ask for banking credentials, OTPs, or UPI PINs.

How to avoid it:

  • Contact your bank only through official customer care numbers or the bank's website
  • Never share confidential banking information over calls or messages

4. Screen Sharing App Scam

Fraudsters persuade victims to install screen-sharing or remote access applications under the pretext of resolving a banking issue. Once you grant access, fraudsters may observe or control your device during financial transactions.

How to avoid it:

  • Do not install remote access applications at the request of unknown individuals
  • Disconnect the call immediately if someone asks you to share your screen during banking transactions

5. Phishing Links and Fake Websites

Fraudsters send messages about KYC updates, account suspension, cashback offers, or rewards, asking you to click on malicious links that lead to fake websites.

How to avoid it:

  • Do not click on suspicious links you receive through SMS, email, or messaging apps
  • Visit your bank's website directly instead of using links you receive from unknown sources

6. OTP and UPI PIN Fraud

Scammers attempt to obtain OTPs or UPI PINs by pretending to verify transactions or update account details.

How to avoid it:

  • Never share your OTP or UPI PIN with anyone
  • Remember that banks never ask customers for these confidential details

7. Lottery, Cashback and Reward Scams

Victims receive messages claiming they have won prizes, cashback, or rewards and scammers ask them to make a payment or share banking details to claim the benefit.

How to avoid it:

  • Be cautious of offers that appear too good to be true
  • Verify promotional offers only through official websites or applications

8. Malicious Software Threats

Fraudsters trick you into downloading malicious software through fake links or attachments, then extract your sensitive banking information.

How to avoid it:

  • Download apps only from official app stores
  • Avoid clicking links or opening attachments from unknown senders

9. Money Muling Fraud

Fraudsters move stolen money through your account or other intermediary accounts, called money mules, to hide illegal transactions.

How to avoid it:

  • Never let anyone use your account to transfer your money on their behalf
  • Report suspicious fund transfer requests to your bank immediately

10. SIM Swap Fraud

Fraudsters clone your SIM to intercept your OTPs, reset your UPI credentials and access your bank account.

How to avoid it:

  • Contact your telecom provider immediately if your SIM stops working unexpectedly
  • Enable SIM lock and avoid sharing personal details with unknown callers

Who is Most Vulnerable to UPI Scams?

Fraudsters often target users who may be less familiar with digital payment practices or are more likely to respond quickly without verification.

These may include:

  • First-time UPI users
  • Senior citizens
  • Individuals searching for customer care numbers online
  • Users responding to cashback, reward, or lottery messages

Regardless of experience, every UPI user must verify transactions before approving them.

What to Do If You Suspect a UPI Fraud?

If you believe a scammer has targeted you, acting quickly can help minimise potential losses.

You should:

  • Contact your bank immediately
  • Report the transaction through your UPI application, where applicable
  • Report the incident through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or the Cybercrime helpline number
  • Preserve transaction details, screenshots, and communication related to the incident

Prompt reporting can support the investigation and help prevent further misuse.

Quick UPI Safety Checklist

Before approving any UPI transaction, remember to:

  • Verify the recipient's name
  • Never share your UPI PIN or OTP
  • Decline unknown collect requests
  • Avoid scanning QR codes from unverified sources
  • Download banking applications only from official app stores
  • Contact your bank using official customer care channels
  • Review the payment details carefully before authorising every transaction

Final Thoughts

UPI offers a fast and convenient way to make digital payments, but staying alert is just as important as knowing how to use the platform. A few simple precautions, combined with awareness of common scam techniques, can help you in protecting your money and ensuring a safer digital banking experience.
