Changed your address, phone number, or email recently? If your KYC details are outdated, something as routine as a mutual fund withdrawal or opening a new bank account can suddenly get delayed. This is exactly where CKYC comes in.
CKYC keeps your KYC records in one centralized place so you don’t repeat the same paperwork with every new bank, NBFC, mutual fund, or insurer. In case your personal details change, your CKYC record needs to change with them. Here’s how the CKYC update process actually works.
What is CKYC?
CKYC (Central Know Your Customer) is a centralized digital system that stores customer KYC information, maintained under the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR) and operated by the Central Registry of Securitisation Asset Reconstruction and Security Interest of India (CERSAI).
When you complete KYC with a Financial Institution for the first time, your details are uploaded to this registry and you are issued a unique 14-digit CKYC number, also called a KIN (KYC Identification Number). Any regulated institution you deal with afterwards, an insurer, a mutual fund house, an NBFC can retrieve your verified record using this number instead of asking you to submit the same documents again.
When Should You Update Your CKYC Details?
Your CKYC record needs updating whenever your personal information changes. Common situations include:
Why it matters: Outdated details can cause transaction delays, communication gaps with your financial institution, or a temporary hold on services until your KYC is re-verified
How to Update Your CKYC Details?
You cannot edit your CKYC record directly on the central registry. The process always runs through the bank or financial institution you already have a relationship with:
Step 1: Contact Your Financial Institution
Reach out to your bank, NBFC, mutual fund house, or insurance provider. Depending on the financial institution, you may be able to start a KYC update through a branch visit, its website, or its mobile app.
Step 2: Share the Updated Information
Tell the institution what has changed and submit the relevant proof such as an address proof if you have relocated, or supporting documents for a name change. CKYC document requirements vary between institutions, so confirm exactly what is needed before you begin.
Step 3: Complete the Verification
The institution verifies the details and documents you have submitted, either through a branch visit or a digital KYC process, depending on what is available.
Step 4: Institution Updates Your CKYC Record
Once verified, the institution submits your revised information to CKYCR. After processing, your updated record becomes available to all other financial institutions linked to your CKYC number.
What Documents You Might Need?
The documents required depend on the nature of the change. Here is a quick reference:
Type of Change | Typical Document Required |
Address change | Updated address proof (utility bill, Aadhaar, rental agreement, etc.) |
Name change | Supporting legal documents (marriage certificate, gazette notification, etc.) |
Contact detail change | Updated Aadhaar-linked mobile number which is active for OTP verification, or updated email address confirmation as requested by the institution |
Identity proof update | Renewed or replaced identity document (Aadhaar, PAN, passport, etc.) |
Other changes | Any specific document your institution requests for the particular update |
Since requirements can differ by institution and by the nature of the change, it is best to check directly with your bank or financial provider rather than assuming.
What If Your CKYC Details are Incorrect?
Sometimes the issue can arise because of errors, such as spelling mistakes, an incorrect date of birth, or a wrong address entered during the original KYC. The same process applies: approach your bank or financial institution, point out the discrepancy, and provide documents that support the correction. The institution will verify and submit the correction to CKYCR on your behalf.
Key Things to Remember
Tip: If you have an urgent transaction pending, confirm with your institution that the CKYC update has been successfully processed before you proceed.
Final Thoughts
Your CKYC details form the backbone of every financial relationship you hold from your savings account to your mutual fund investments. Keeping them accurate is not a compliance formality; it is what keeps your transactions smooth and your accounts easy to access. The next time your address, number, or name changes, remember: your bank is where the update begins, and a few minutes spent today can save you a lot of hassle later.
