Sampada Sankranti’ by Ujjivan Small Finance Bank focuses on kite safety awareness

Hyderabad, 09 January 2026: Ujjivan Small Finance Bank has initiated Sampada Sankranti, a public awareness campaign in Hyderabad, aimed at promoting safe and responsible kite flying during Sankranti, Telangana's rich cultural heritage festival. The initiative addresses the recurring use of hazardous Chinese manja and glass-coated thread, which causes injuries to people and birds each year, while supporting traditional, eco-friendly alternatives that honour the festival's cultural roots.

The campaign reflects a commitment to community safety, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation. It is being implemented through a three-pronged approach designed to reach diverse audiences across the city:

  • Educational Outreach (January 5 to 14): Awareness sessions are being conducted in schools across Hyderabad, educating students about the dangers of unsafe manja and encouraging adoption of traditional, biodegradable alternatives. The programme aims to instil responsible practices among young kite flyers and their families.
  • Street-Level Engagement (January 6 to 8): Road shows featuring short plays, demonstrations, and interactive sessions at high-traffic junctions to engage commuters and residents directly, bringing the safety message to where people live and work.
  • Public Activation at Aparna Neo Mall (January 9 to 11): The central public activation at Aparna Neo Mall, Nallagandla, features a 12x12 ft handcrafted kite made of bamboo, cloth, and paper, prominently displayed in the mall atrium and adorned with Telangana cultural motifs such as Bhogi, Kanuma,, farming life, and harvest scenes. An 8x8 ft Eco Pledge Wall invites visitors to commit to avoiding Chinese and glass manja. ‘Save Birds’ installation, depicting a bird’s talon entangled in manja, educates visitors on the risks to birds and safe methods of rescue.

Commenting on this initiative, Lakshman Velayutham, Chief Marketing Officer, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, said, “Every Sankranti, we see avoidable injuries caused by unsafe kite-flying practices. Sampada Sankranti is our effort to go beyond messaging by taking the conversation directly to schools, streets and community spaces, and encouraging safer, traditional alternatives. By combining education, cultural pride and public engagement, the campaign seeks to drive lasting behavioural change and ensure that the communities enjoy the festival at the fullest, while ensuring the safety of birds and the environment.”
